VP, Facultative Underwriting

Job Summary:
- Manages and mentors the facultative underwriting team, provides sound underwriting judgment in co-signing and evaluating large (> $10 million) facultative risks. Serves as the primary facultative client contact and works directly with clients to address their issues/concerns. Subject matter expert for the Ascent underwriting manual for the U.S., partnering closely with the medical director, chief underwriter, and other key stakeholders to support updates to existing conditions and the development of new content.
Essential Functions:
- (45%) Manages the facultative underwriting team and contractors, including workflow, staff development, and establishing individual and team goals and standards. Facilitates periodic financial case clinics and training opportunities for continuing education purposes for the underwriters. Conducts monthly 1:1 meetings with staff and monthly facultative meetings for feedback and consistency of procedures, which are documented for reference. Serves as the primary point of contact for the facultative clients. Communicates effectively and extensively with internal clients (staff and other departments) and external clients (direct carriers) on facultative issues, technical support questions, systems needs, etc for Hannover Re to provide value and expertise to clients.
- (15%) Co-signs files that exceed the underwriters’ individual approval authority, mentoring the underwriters via feedback on their case write-ups. Provides sound medical, financial, and nonmedical underwriting decisions on facultative cases within approval authority (up to $25 million) and within Hannover Re’s time service standards to ensure competitive offers are made that will allow profitable business to be ceded to Hannover Re US.
- (10%) Serves as a consultative subject matter expert for the Ascent underwriting manual for the U.S., partnering closely with the medical director, chief underwriter, and other key stakeholders to support updates to existing conditions and the development of new content. Provides review, guidance, and editorial support as necessary on proposed content changes and additions, ensuring clinical and underwriting alignment. Supports Ascent releases by assisting with client communications and contributing to internal staff education and external/client training sessions or presentations, as needed.
- (10%) Represents Hannover Re US at national, regional, and/or local underwriting meetings or on committees, to increase the visibility of Hannover Re US in the industry and enhance Hannover Re’s position as a knowledge reinsurer.
- (10%) Participates in client meetings, visits or client audits as requested, to provide underwriting knowledge and skills for the task required.
- (10%) Provides support for Actuarial and Marketing departments to assist with overall understanding of clients’ underwriting strengths and weaknesses from day-to-day facultative interactions, as well as facultative placement nuances. Creates and distributes reports on client production and placement data, to be shared with clients and internal management.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum 15 years underwriting experience, including large case underwriting
- Minimum 5 years of reinsurance underwriting experience
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle a wide variety of duties
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Broad direct and reinsurance underwriting experience
- Management/team building experience
- Basic level computer skills in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
- Industry course work/designations such as FALU, FLMI, CLU, or related graduate degree
Travel:
- 5% overnight travel required, both domestic and international.
Compensation (Inclusive of Base + Bonus):
- $185,300 - $250,700
