Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd is a BMA regulated dual license reinsurer and has a focus on property catastrophe reinsurance contracts, mainly on an excess of loss basis, as well as on life & health business, mainly financial solutions. We offer reinsurance capacity on a global basis with more than USD 1.9 billion of gross reinsurance revenues.We are currently seeking applicants for our HEAD OF NORTH AMERICA, UNDERWRITING position reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer. This position plays a key role in supporting the Company’s strategic financial targets by underwriting P&C business and is responsible for overseeing a diverse, complex portfolio of treaty reinsurance business for the US and Canada as well as the leadership of a team of underwriters. The person shall also undertake additional related duties from time to time.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the members of North American Team (excluding Mexico) and ensure key deliverables are met.
  • Manage all underwriting related aspects of the assigned portfolio, which includes internal and external communication with cedants, brokers, colleagues in Bermuda and related companies for the North American market.
  • Participate in the underwriting strategy and processes, including evaluation of submissions, analyzing and interpreting exposures, determining coverage and planning and controlling client activity in the various markets.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of the business underwritten in collaboration with the Modelling Team.
  • Support the business planning and forecasting process by monitoring premium developments, claims and general industry trends.
  • Assist in projects related to the improvement of the Company’s portfolio management strategies.
  • Proactively engage with all stakeholders within the Group and build relationships with broker and clients to deepen existing relationships and seek out new business opportunities.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of underwriting data in underwriting systems as well as adhere to internal guidelines, underwriting procedures and controls.
  • Participate in Underwriting and Claims audits as needed.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment assisting in developing a positive company culture.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience in the re/insurance industry with at least five (5) years in underwriting focusing on the property catastrophe segment.
  • Profound knowledge about the US insurance and reinsurance market
  • Minimum of three (3) years management experience leading a team.
  • Professional designation such as Actuarial degree, CPCU or ACII.
  • Detailed understanding of the use of catastrophe models such as Verisk and /or RMS.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to establish, maintain and expand business relationships at all levels.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of applications with the ability to learn new data-management tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and to produce quality deliverables on time with tight deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic with great attention to detail, hardworking, willing to put in extra hours as needed.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and across the Hannover Re Group.
