Senior Underwriter

In Bermuda, the core subsidiary Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd. is a BMA regulated dual license reinsurer and has a focus on property catastrophe reinsurance contracts, mainly on an excess of loss basis, as well as on life & health business, mainly financial solution. Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd. is a core part of Hannover Re and strategically operates as the Centre of Excellence for natural catastrophe risks.
We are currently seeking applicants for our SENIOR UNDERWRITER position reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer. This position will undertake the responsibilities listed below.
Main Responsibilities:
- Manage all underwriting related aspects of the assigned portfolio which includes all internal and external communication with cedants, brokers, colleagues in Bermuda, related companies, subsidiaries and branches around the globe.
- Participate in the underwriting strategy and processes, including evaluation of submissions, analyzing and interpreting exposures, determining coverage and planning and controlling client activity in the global reinsurance (non-US) markets.
- Calculate appropriate risk premium, exercise discretion and independent judgment in the analysis and evaluation of risk assessments.
- Negotiate within the limits of delegated authority and in accordance with internal guidelines, underwriting procedures and controls to achieve profile objectives.
- Support the business planning and forecasting process.
- Promote the Company’s expertise by participating in industry conferences and events.
- Proactively engage with all stakeholders within the Group and build relationships with brokers and clients with the objective of identifying new and growing existing business opportunities.
- Working collaboratively with in a team environment assisting and mentoring junior members of the team.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, engineering, economics, international management, mathematics or a related field.
- Professional designation such as CPCU or ACII.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of underwriting experience in the reinsurance or insurance industry with dedicated experience on the property catastrophe segment.
- Working knowledge of international catastrophe markets.
- Proven experience leading projects and complex accounts.
- Detailed understanding in the use of catastrophe models predominantly VeRisk.
- Proficiency, written and verbal, in English. Other languages are considered an asset.
- Ability to establish, maintain and expand business relationships at all levels.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills along with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and have the willingness to work additional hours as needed to meet business objectives.
